Prenatal Yoga is a delightful way to decompress, stretch, breathe and connect with the little yogini inside. Not only is it therapeutic in the present moment, it is extremely beneficial for natural childbirth and the physical, emotional recovery of labor and birth.
For example, in order for Baby to pass through the Birth Canal, our hips must open to allow space for the Baby to come down and pass smoothly through the pelvis. In our yoga practice, there are many postures that aid in the release of hip tension and tightness. Many women carry an abundance of trauma in their hips, due to a phenomenon called “Body Armoring”, where any degree of sexual wounding can create rigidity in the muscle structure – it can even affect your bones! In your yoga practice you can find tremendous relief as you connect your breath and awareness, your emotionality, to the physical harboring of trauma.
It’s OK to cry during a yoga class. In fact I believe a lot of practitioners encourage that physical release of tears to aid in psychological/emotional recovery. In Hot Yoga, it’s impossible to differentiate between tears and sweat!
Postnatal yoga is a wonderful recovery for the body. Some classes allow Baby to join you on the mat, which I found to be tremendous fun and no need for a sitter!
Some environments are opposed to breastfeeding in public. A postnatal yoga class is not one of them. There is no judgement here, instead you will find a lot of encouragement to nurture your Baby and yourself!
