Bath Time

by Gabrielle Anwar

Bath time is the perfect opportunity for skin on skin time. So whenever possible climb into the tub with Baby, use your own body for him to rest on, always mindful of keeping his head supported and of course, his face above the water. This introduces his comfortability submerged, and you can actually begin to let him feel his buoyancy preparing him now to swim unassisted. Remember he came from fluid, and should feel familiar with the warm, enveloping sensation.

While supporting his head gently, allow his body to float freely, maintaining the slow movements and pace.

While soaping your baby, with a mild, organic baby soap, use this time to massage his skin softly, so that he can luxuriate in deep relaxation. You too should relax, as he will be sensitive to your stress level. Be sure to talk softly to him, explaining what you are about to do with his precious little body. Make sure the level of water is deep enough and warm enough for your enjoyment too, you too can lie back, with Baby on your belly, both of you relaxing.

If there is no bath tub for you to enjoy, then the kitchen sink or a baby bath will suffice.

Maintain the slowness of your pace, and the dialogue about what you intend to do to his body. Indulging the relaxation aspect of his bath as much as possible. Keep the room temperature warm, and wrap and dry him off slowly, gently. If you have a massage practice, using an organic oil or lotion, he will be primed, serene and all ready to embrace the tenderness. Bath time is most beneficial before bedtime, for the obvious reasons. The sooner you establish a routine, the better.
