Potty Time

by Gabrielle Anwar

Every toddler is ready for the potty at different stages in their development. There is much trial and error at this juncture. Be prepared for mishaps and misses. Your toddler’s system is still developing and bladder and bowel control is not entirely reliable yet.

Have a potty in the bathroom, assuming she has witnessed you going to the loo, she will be happy to mimic you, side by side.

You also might pop a potty in her play area, she might enjoy just sitting on it for no apparent reason. But familiarity is important. There are diapers available that transition your toddler from side fastening to pulling up and down, like underwear, so they gain control of at least something early on. But the inevitable mistake in their undies is just part of the progression to cloth panties.

Most toddlers become so invested in their play, that redirecting their attention to the potty is just not something that interests them.

Be vigilante with their routine. After drinking water, suggest they sit on the potty. After meals get into the habit of hopping on the potty for a few minutes. Preventative action is much more likely to prevent mistakes.

When the moment comes when she succeeds with a little pee, don’t intimidate her with praise! Stay calm and simply acknowledge her success. “You did a pee. In the potty.”

Too much reward will rob her of her own simple triumph. The best recognition is the acknowledgement that she accomplished what she’s been working on. Nothing more.
